Furthering my Painting Skill

Here I wanted to Focus more on "the application of lighting to create depth". This is because of how, in my last image, the painting looked very flat as the character and the environment didn't seem to have any shadow/highlight to create depth and dimension in the image.

I used a simplified colour palette here as this helped me focus more on painting lighting and tone than on painting colour. The combination of yellows/oranges and purples also creates a very dreamlike quality in the image. This effect is aided by the use of soft brushstrokes which invoke a blurry, surrealist quality.

 As you can see, the colors purple and yellow are opposite on the colour wheel which is why the colours in the image work so well together. This means the colours are complimentary. Using yellow and purple for the darkest and lightest areas of the painting means the contrast stands out in the painting as they are vibrant.

I have also used analogous colours in the design, as the purples/reds/oranges are next to each other on the colour wheel. As the colours match well they create a serene and comfortable aesthetic, this means they are harmonious and pleasing to the eye. This is what gives the image its dreamlike quality.
