Documenting the Painting Process

Another painting I started earlier this semester. I decided rather than solely working on portraits or busts I would like to start adding environment into my images. This would give the character a sense of place and time. Also, it would allow me to practice my environment drawing which is an area I feel I am weaker at.

Here's a step by step of my painting process that documents how I built up this painting so far.

Most notably in this drawing, I used a gradient background rather than a brush-painted one as I have done previously. This was so I could keep the background simple to make painting environment assets onto it easier (as they would be more visible). This way, I can always make the background more painterly later if I want to, or, painting this way could go well and show me a new way of working.
